Large Tech Company Technical Assistance in SFLarge Tech Company in San Francisco
Picture
Envirolutions Consulting was engaged by a large private tech company in San Francisco committed to adhering to San Francisco’s Zero Waste ordinance, especially as it pertains to the Large Refuse Generator Ordinance (LRG) that went into effect on July 1, 2019. This ordinance stipulates that all LRGs of 40 cubic yards of waste generation per week or greater be able to pass a waste characterization with minimal contamination in their trash/recycling/organics streams or pay significant surcharges and hire Zero Waste Facilitators, or waste sorters, to ensure they can pass subsequent re-audits. This tech company anticipated the difficulties in being able to pass this waste audit and hired Envirolutions to devise a plan to institute a culture of correctly recycling and composting throughout all operations and departments across their three largest buildings in downtown San Francisco.
The largest of the three buildings totals over 1 million square feet with over 8000 employees occupying the space on a daily basis. It is estimated that the buildings could incur up to tens of thousands of dollars per month in fines if found out of compliance. In addition, these buildings might also lose their diversion discount and pay additional surcharges for contamination. Baseline waste audits conducted by Recology were used as a precedent for knowing what the weekly generation is, and the current diversion and contamination rates for each of the buildings.

Mission Trail Non-Exclusive Franchise Commercial Technical Assistance
Picture
Mission Trail Waste Systems Mission Trail Waste Systems (MTWS) engaged Envirolutions Consulting in April 2019 to provide commercial (COM) technical assistance for customers in their non-exclusive franchise (NEF) area that were being required by a recently passed local ordinance to secure both recycling and organics collection service (for larger generators of 4 cubic yards of weekly generation or greater). The technical assistance provided by Envirolutions included in-person site visits as well as phone and email communication. The purpose of the project was to assist customers with the transition to their new services as well as help them set up effective programs within their daily operations. Customers were also informed of increases in the costs of waste collection that would coincide with the new contract inception on July 1, 2019.

Recycling Waste Characterization Study in Pittsburg, CA
Picture
Envirolutions Consulting, LLC conducted a waste characterization study of the inbound loads received by a privately-held MRF in Pittsburg, CA. The purpose of the waste characterization was to determine the relative percentages and volume of material types received through a representative sample of materials received as inbound recycling loads at the facility. The study did not attempt to control the point of origin or sector (residential, multifamily or commercial) but rather to sample inbound materials overall. The intended use for the results of this characterization are to extrapolate from these findings and provide to future material recycling facility (MRF) equipment manufacturers a snapshot of what materials are being received. This will be useful in prioritizing what new equipment and sorting technologies investments based on what is anticipated to be received at the MRF.
